Ginger is known for its spicy, hot taste and ability to remove fishy odors, enhancing the flavor of dishes. However, it can spoil quickly if not stored properly. Here are several methods to preserve ginger and keep it fresh longer:
- Preserve Ginger with Green Tea: Wrap some green tea in tissue or newspaper (tea bags work too) and place it inside a plastic bag with the ginger. The tea absorbs moisture, preventing the ginger from rotting. Check and replace the tea bag if it becomes damp.
- Preserve Ginger with Salt: Wrap the ginger tightly in plastic wrap with some salt. The salt helps preserve it by absorbing excess moisture. Store the wrapped ginger in the fridge.
- Preserve Ginger with Baking Soda: Line a box with paper towels and sprinkle baking soda over them. Place the ginger in the box and cover with more paper towels and baking soda. Store in a cool, dry place, checking occasionally to ensure it stays dry.
- Preserve Ginger with Rice: Clean and dry the ginger, then place it in a rice bag and tie it tightly. The rice absorbs moisture, preventing the ginger from wilting or sprouting.
- Preserve Ginger in Sand: Bury the ginger in clean, dry sand placed in a box. Keep the box in a dry, cool place. This method can keep ginger fresh for up to six months.
These methods help prevent ginger from wilting, sprouting, or rotting, allowing you to enjoy it for longer.
