A recent discovery in an abandoned house in St. Brelades, on the Channel Island, has sparked concern among locals and scientists alike. A large Asian hornet nest, measuring 15 inches in diameter and housing approximately 1,500 hornets, was found attached to the ceiling. This marks the 171st nest found this year, showing a worrying rise from previous years. Authorities are warning residents to stay alert and report any sightings immediately.

Asian hornets (Vespa velutina nigrithorax), native to Southeast Asia, are an invasive species that pose a serious threat to local ecosystems and bee populations in the UK. Known for preying on honeybees, they can devastate essential pollinators, affecting agriculture and biodiversity. The Channel Islands, including St. Brelades, are especially vulnerable due to their proximity to mainland Europe, where Asian hornets first arrived in France, likely via cargo ships.

If you spot an Asian hornet or its nest, do not approach or disturb it. Instead, report the sighting to the Animal and Plant Health Agency. Sealing cracks in homes can also prevent hornets from entering. Staying informed and cautious is crucial to limiting their spread. Community vigilance can help protect local wildlife and ecosystems from this growing threat.
